300 Career Prep Fellows take San Francisco by Storm – here’s the recap!

By: Career Prep

It was a weekend filled with inspiring messages, coaching sessions, candid conversations, and tons of MLT family love. 300 Career Prep (CP) Fellows descended on San Francisco during their three-day Pre-Internship Seminar (April 8-10), which was hosted by LinkedIn this year. The seminar included a Tech Boot Camp with sessions led by LinkedIn, Inuit, Pandora and Google. Fellows gained new insight into the many facets of a tech company.  Our fellows even caught the attention of the San Francisco Chronicle  in an article that showcased MLT’s progress increasing diversity in tech companies.

Pat Wadors speaking to fellows on the importance of Belonging.

The weekend began at LinkedIn’s brand new building in downtown San Francisco. CP fellows received a  warm and motivating welcome from LinkedIn’s Senior Vice President of Global Talent Organization, Pat Wadors, who encouraged creating moments of belonging for others.

She explained the missing piece in the conversation on Diversity and Inclusion is the feeling of Belonging. “Call DIBs on diversity,” she said. Wadors also wrote this LinkedIn post highlighting MLT

Following Wadors’ presentation, a LinkedIn employee panel “kept it real” by sharing their experiences, providing words of advice and detailing strategies for navigating their careers. The evening culminated in a two-hour Big Bus sightseeing tour of San Francisco.

Saturday was another amazing day at the LinkedIn Mountain View campus! Global Head of LinkedIn’s Business Leadership Program, Gordon Tobin, shared his incredible journey from Australia to where he is now. Other sessions included effective business communications, problem solving, navigating ambiguity and presentation skills. Following these breakout sessions, fellows attended a networking reception with the partner companies. You can see a list of the partners in attendance here.

Sunday morning began with an Internship Action Plan workshop and an Emotional Intelligence session that gave fellows candid advice on internship preparedness and workplace conduct. The weekend wrapped up with fellows meeting with their assigned MLT coaches.

The Pre-Internship Seminar not only offered fellows insight into navigating the professional world from seasoned Silicon Valley professionals , but also the opportunity to network with other talented CP students from universities across America.

We are so proud of our CP fellows and excited to see them put their lessons from this weekend into action!  For most this was their first trip to California and our LinkedIn hosts made it really special, so we say a big thank you! We thank our other partner companies for joining us in San Francisco. We appreciate your support in developing the next generation of diverse and talented leaders.
