MLT PROGRAM
MBA Prep 2018Complete this sentence, "If not for MLT..."
I wouldn't have a network of like-minded people of color in business schools across the country. I wouldn't have had the structure or encouragement to power through and finish the GMAT or application process.
Please describe the impact MLT had immediately upon completing your program.
I was accepted into UCLA Anderson in February and I can't think of a better impact than getting into my top choice with a full ride.
How has MLT changed the financial/economic trajectory for you and your family?
By participating in MLT MBA Prep, I was able to find out about the Consortium and received a full scholarship to UCLA Anderson. By not paying for school, I have been able to use my current savings for living expenses and will be able to have more disposable income once I graduate to help my family since I won't have any loans.
Has MLT elevated your personal and professional aspirations? If so, please provide an example.
If I weren’t pursuing my MBA, I would have been successful in consulting, but I don't think I would have been happy. By going through MLT MBA Prep, I found my passion for real estate and plan on pursuing a career in the private sector then transitioning to the public sector as the Secretary of Housing & Urban Development.
How has MLT's community helped advance your personal and/or professional happiness?
MLT helped me find what professional happiness meant by examining elements outside of salary, namely culture. During the application process, I found that culture fit was the most important element of school selection and I have applied that same logic to my job search process, which has resulted in greater happiness.
Speak to a challenge MLT helped you overcome and how did that help your trajectory (i.e. confidence that you belong, growth mindset, vulnerability).
Coach Shannon was great at keeping me grounded and helping with stress management, which was essential to my confidence with the GMAT and helped me be more patient when waiting to hear back from schools.
Have you helped advance vulnerable people on their path to economic mobility? If so, how?
Yes, I have financially supported my family and helped them set up budgets to ensure they are spending wisely.
Share 2-3 ways you've been able to accelerate your organization's journey toward greater diversity and inclusion.
I have worked with UCLA Anderson as a Consortium liaison to help plan events and build a sense of community amongst students. I also serve as an interviewer and play a role in selecting the next class of diverse students. Lastly, I serve as the VP of Admissions for the Black Business Students Association where I am the first point of contact for all prospective students interested in BBSA.
Share your favorite song, movie, or book, and why it appeals to you.
“Never Would've Made It” by Marvin Sapp. This song reminds me that I never would have made it to this point without the people, resources, and organizations that have helped me get here, including MLT.
What is your superpower?
My superpower is my ability to continue to press forward despite the obstacles that are in my way. From growing up in an environment where I was not expected to succeed, to health complications, to financing my entire college tuition, I have faced many challenges that should have brought me down, but I continued to fight and succeed to tell my story.
What gives you hope?
Progress gives me hope. Working hard for something and seeing the positive results helps me to continue to strive for better.
