Embracing Presence and Purpose Over Productivity: Lessons from Dawn Christian’s TEDx Talk “Breaking Up with Busyness”

Dawn Christian (she/her) is a MLT Alum and Senior Director of MLT’s MBA Professional Development Program. She’s also a leadership advisor who challenges busyness culture. Dawn advocates for Ethos-Driven Leadership™, prioritizing authenticity and purpose. As founder of BeLeadership™ | Belong by Dawn Christian®, she redefines leadership through belonging, a fundamental principle that emphasizes authenticity and well-being. Dawn inspires leaders to fuse their values with their leadership roles.

In an age characterized by hustle culture, many of us may find ourselves racing through the day, sacrificing our well-being for the sake of our to-do lists. Have you ever been so busy that you forgot to take a lunch break, away from your desk? If that sounds familiar, it may be time to reconsider your relationship with productivity.

Dawn Christian, MLT Alum and Senior Director of MLT MBA PD, powerfully addresses the importance of presence over productivity in her TEDx Talk, “Breaking Up with Busyness.” As we forge into 2025–an era that demands a commitment to mental wellness and self-preservation, Dawn’s message resonates deeply. Her insights invite us to reflect on the significance of being present and aligned with our true purpose.

The Burden of Busyness

Dawn begins her talk recounting an eye-opening experience that revealed the toll that busyness can take on our lives. While grappling with a medical emergency, she was met with the expectation to send presentation slides to her boss before going to the hospital. It’s moments like these that encapsulate the pressures of modern work culture, where our productivity is prioritized over our well-being. Dawn’s experience highlights a harsh reality: busyness does not care about our wellness.

This narrative is especially salient for Black women in America, who disproportionately face chronic stressors that can adversely affect their health outcomes. Juggling multiple roles and responsibilities while navigating societal expectations and perceived discrimination, many Black women may find themselves caught in a cycle of busyness that leaves little room for self-care, reflection, and meaningful connection.

Rethinking Our Value

Throughout her talk, Dawn challenges the belief that our worth is intrinsically linked to our productivity. In a culture that often equates doing with being, she urges us to reconsider our definitions of success. Are we genuinely living, or are we merely busy? The distinction has real implications for our health, relationships, and overall sense of fulfillment. By addressing this fundamental question, Dawn encourages us to reassess our priorities and align our actions with our true values. In doing so, we can create a more balanced lifestyle that honors our well-being above all else.

The Intersection of Ethos and Wellness

One of the biggest takeaways from the TEDx Talk is Dawn’s insight on ethos-driven leadership—the intersection where authenticity and purpose meet—and how busyness can negatively impact this vital aspect of life. When we become overwhelmed by incessant tasks, we risk losing sight of what truly matters. As she mentions, “Sometimes we get so busy that we forget to eat.” This isn’t just a metaphor; it’s a reminder of how busyness can infiltrate our lives and capacity to thrive.

Emphasizing the power of intentionality, Dawn says that true visionary leadership hinges on a deep connection with oneself. By embracing presence and mindfulness, we can foster healthier work environments, regain purpose, and cultivate more meaningful relationships–both in our personal and professional lives.

We invite you to watch Dawn Christian’s TEDx Talk, “Breaking Up with Busyness,” and reflect on her insights going into 2025. In a world that often demands more than we can give, her message is an important reminder to reclaim our time, prioritize our health, and cultivate a life defined by intention and purpose.
