THE CHALLENGE
Economic Mobility Is Blocked
A child born into the bottom 40% of U.S. income has a 60% chance of remaining there as an adult.
With most Americans now working for large companies, employers are one of the most powerful—and often overlooked—levers for expanding economic opportunity at scale.
When employers evaluate talent based on merit and strengthen pay and benefits practices, they unlock pathways to upward mobility for millions—while improving performance at the same time.
THE MODEL
One Engine, Four Levers
System level barriers require system level solutions. MLT operates a single engine that connects talent development and employer transformation across four levers.
Talent side
Delivering Economic Mobility for Students by fixing the college-to-career transition so they can secure high-trajectory jobs.
Maximizing Career Trajectories to ensure individuals realize their full potential and multiply their impact.
Employer side
Cultivating Entrepreneurs and High Growth Businesses empowering individuals to lead successful ventures that scale to create more jobs and opportunities for others.
Strengthening Employer Talent Practices that enhance their competitiveness and expand economic opportunities.
MLT connects both sides through a single engine to expand economic opportunity at scale.
PILLAR 1
From Degree to Career-Path First Jobs
60% of all four-year graduates of color are unemployed or in jobs that don't require a college degree.
College doesn't provide students what they need to meet the employer hiring bar – and most students lack the social capital needed to meet that bar on their own.
MLT creates the critical readiness bridge between colleges and employers to ensure students are prepared for and obtain career-path first jobs.
PILLAR 1
Immediate Economic Mobility
Our outcomes provide immediate, life-changing economic mobility to these families.
90%+ of MLT's predominantly low-income college students land jobs averaging $90K, in a system where 60% of all four-year graduates of color fail to land a college degree job.
Since its launch, MLT's Career Prep program has grown from its first cohort of just 30 Fellows to an annual cohort of 2,500+.
PILLAR 2
Maximizing Career Trajectories
Getting a great first job is an important start. But too often, professionals from low-income backgrounds and communities of color encounter barriers to advancement that can stall long-term growth.
Through data analysis from 20 years of work with 200+ companies that employ 7 million people, we have learned that all professionals need certain key ingredients such as high-accountability coaching, a high-performance playbook, and door-opening relationships to help them reach their full potential.
The Multiplier Effect
As MLT alumni advance to executive roles, they have a multiplier effect on their organizations, expanding economic mobility for exponentially more American workers.
They open doors for the next generation, including MLT's 12K+ alumni rising leaders across all sectors.
PILLAR 3
Cultivating Entrepreneurs and High-Growth Businesses
The startup ecosystem is America's epicenter of wealth creation. It is also the epicenter of wealth disparity.
MLT is building a more inclusive ecosystem that broadens capital beyond a small set of networks and makes opportunity more meritocratic.
Building the Ecosystem
MLT's support of founders and funders is not only philanthropy. It is about unlocking closed ecosystems, closing capital gaps, and expanding access to resources and networks for the next generation of high-growth businesses.
Today, more than 700 MLT Fellows are startup founders. MLT alumni include 82 people working in venture capital, with 209 startups founded by alumni, and 15 venture capital funds that have collectively raised over $3.5 billion in capital.
